Dominian Sisiters visit Our Lady of the ValleySpecial Guests atOur Lady of the Valley Council Meeting
Our Chaplian, Fr Amador Abundo, Grand Knight, Br. Stan Pulesh and District Deputy #7, Gerard Choquette, welcomed two of the five new Domincan Sisters of St. Cecila {click here} as special guests at our September general meeting. Sister Mary Blanchette Cumming and Sister Mary Bethany Zeitler graciously agreed to share with us some of the history of their Order and their call to service here in the Vancouver Archdiocese. The Sisters brought greetings from Sister Mary Jacinta Li, Superior of thier Apostolate in our Diocese, as she was unable to attend due to a previous commitment. Our Council members and their wives enjoyed the talk by the Sisters and afterward we all shared a nice catered meal of Chinese food as the Sisters answered questions about their Apostlate.
St. Luke's Parish Maple Ridge BC
St Luke's Parish's history is based in a devotion to Our Blessed Mother Mary and our strong Marian devotions continue to this day under the protection of St. Luke. The 'parish" started out as a mission chapel under the patronage of "Our Lady of Grace". Later it became a "Parish Church" named {for a short while} "Our Lady of the Valley". When the archbishop came to bless the church, the name was changed to "Most Pure Heart of Mary". Finally, the church building, was moved to its present site on Dewdney Trunk Road and the name was again changed, to St. Luke's.
Santa Maria at the ACT“Santa Maria” Float at the Arts Center TheaterOn July 16th , 2011, our District 7 model of Columbus' ship, the Santa Maria was loaned to a local Youth Theatrical Group as a stage prop for their Summer production of Gilbert and Sullivan's “The Pirates of Penzance” at the Arts Center Theater { ACT } in Maple Ridge BC Our Lady of the Valley, Council 10889, Maple Ridge BC, in cooperation with Archbishop Carney Assembly, responded to a request from an Rayne Beveridge, Artistic Director of The Odeum Theatre Society for the use of our float for their summer production. We felt this was a worthwhile event for us to get involved in as it was to assist an amateur, non-profit, theatrical training “school” providing on-stage experience for young people {12 to 18 years of age} in our local community. – It also provided a very public venue to display the Knights of Columbus Logos. – Following is a brief item from Rayne Beveridge about their organization:
“The Odeum Theatre Society is a local non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing meaningful and accessible musical theatre programs for youth in Maple Ridge, and has been running for six years with great success. The program it produces is a ten day intensive musical theatre workshop where students, ages 12 - 18, get their scripts on day one and study and rehearse vigorously, striving for excellence and showmanship, until their public performance 9 days later. The students leave with a sense of great achievement and the community is enriched through their performance. None of this would be possible without the support of key members in the community such as the Knights of Columbus. Their generosity and their eagerness to help added a fabulous addition to our stage performance, not only by lending us their ship, but actually bringing it to us as well. We're very excited to have it as a part of our set and also very grateful for their efforts.” Sincerely, Artistic Director, Odeum Theatre Society - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Silver Rose
One Life, One RoseOur Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose RunKnights of Columbus Honours Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Lady of the Valley Council of the Knights of Columbus participated in a North American, Pro Life event paying special tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, through the Silver Rose Program. This program involves running a Silver Rose from Ontario through the United States to Monterrey, Mexico. The program began in Ontario and concludes in Mexico on Dec. 12, 2011, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Rose was received at Our Lady of the Valley Council in Maple Ridge, July 14th, on it's journey through British Columbia. It was carried in procession for the morning Mass at St. Luke's Parish. Immediately following Mass, Father Amador Abundo led us in the special Silver Rose Prayer Service, with the Rose displayed in the Sanctuary, near the Altar. Shortly after the Prayer Service, the Silver Rose continued it's journey and was delivered to Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Port Coquitlam. The Rose is scheduled to arrive at Star of the Sea Council, in White Rock, on 22nd of July and then cross into Washington State on the 24th of July.
Through the Silver Rose Program the Knights of BC/ Yukon State, show our support for the Church and its bishops and priests as we pray for the continued strength to do so in these troubled times. The Silver Rose also symbolizes our commitment to restoring respect for the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses,” said Wil Wilmot , state deputy, chief executive of the Knights of Columbus in BC/Yukon. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
